Serbia needed a win to qualify from Group D, Australia needed a win and either a Ghana victory over Germany in the other game, or – if German won – a sizeable swing in goal difference. It all looked possible when Tim Cahill somehow beat Serbian defenders in the air to make it 1-0 in the 69th and then Brett Holman’s strike made it 2-0 in the 73rd

THE BIG PICTURE It wasn’t supposed to be like this, was it? After the way both teams ran out winners in the first game, it seemed like Germany would roll into the semis and Ghana would do to Australia what they’d done to Serbia in the opener, given how well the Aussies had defended against Germany. Apparently learning from the mistakes of the first game is perfectly a-okay, at least for Serbia and Australia, and now Germany and Ghana are left to fight it out for their World Cup lives.

THE BIG PICTURE Australia were absolutely mullered in their first game, 4-0 by Germany. Factor in Tim Cahill’s red card and his suspension for today, and you can see the problems mounting. Midfielder Cahill was easily the Socceroos main source of goals, and apparently Pim Verbeek’s solution to his team’s lack of strikers.
