Paraguay 2, Slovokia 0
Paraguay moved into sole place in group F with a dominating 2-0 victory over Slovakia.
Enrique Vera opened the scoring with a chip shot following a Slovakian turnover. Paraguay finally sealed the victory in the 86th minute when Christian Riveros’ shot beat an out of position Jan Mucha to the far post.
Slovakia’s offense was stagnate, failing to put a shot on goal until the 93rd minute. “We made two mistakes and conceded two goals,” Slovakia coach Vladimir Weiss said. “There was always a punishment for our mistakes. Our opponent was a really high quality opponent and their victory was deserved.”
Italy 1, New Zealand 1
New Zealand provided one of the shocks of the tournament so far by drawing with reigning world champions Italy.
The All-Whites struck first with a goal by Shane Smeltz in the 7th minute. Simon Elliott’s free kick was mishandled by 36-year-old captain Fabio Cannavaro and fell to Smeltz who struck it from close range past backup goalkeeper Federico Marchetti, who probably should have made the save. The goal was New Zealand’s only shot on target.
The Italians equalized in the 29th minute on a penalty kick when Tommy Smith committed on off the ball foul on Daniel De Rossi inside the box. Smith recieved a yellow card and Vincenzo Iaquinta scored from the spot.
The Italians had all the possession and all the chances for the remainder of the game but could not break down a staunch New Zealand defense.
Brazil 3, Ivory Coast 1
Another African team is on the verge of elimination as the Ivory Coast was dismantled by favorites Brazil, who are now officially into the knockout rounds.
Louis Fabiano opened the scoring for Brazil in the 25th minute. He completed his brace five minutes after halftime by beating two Ivorian defenders and the goalkeeper. Replays showed that Fabiano handled the ball twice in the buildup to the goal but nothing was called by the referee. Brazil built a 3-0 lead when Kaka’s cross found the foot of Elano in the 62nd minute.
The game took a chippy turn in the last half-hour. Elano went off with a shin injury in the 67th minute. Didier Drogba’s header in the 78th minute brought one back for the Ivory Coast. Kaka was controversially sent off in the 88th minute after an obvious flop from Kader Keita. Kaka will miss Brazil’s final group match against Portugal.
